The third edition of the international symphonic composition competition Dante 700 has reached its final stage. In addition to the concert that will determine the winning score, numerous other initiatives will take place between Florence and Prato.

The Competition is a project of the Camerata Strumentale di Prato and the Orchestra Filarmonica di Firenze – Filharmonie, in collaboration with Tempo Reale, and is held under the patronage and with the support of the Region of Tuscany, the Municipality of Florence, the Municipality of Prato, and Cidim. Project supporters include Fondazione CR Firenze and Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Prato.

A total of 48 scores were submitted by composers of 16 different nationalities from all over the world.

The international jury, chaired by Anders Hillborg, one of the most authoritative composers on the international scene, and composed of leading composers such as Silvia Colasanti and Mauro Montalbetti, as well as Hugo Ticciati, one of the most acclaimed performers of contemporary music, Jonathan Webb, conductor, Alberto Batisti, and Paolo Cognetti, has selected the three finalist scores, which will be performed in a public concert on October 10. The winning score will be published by Edizioni Curci in the Stilnovo series.

As in the previous edition, it was possible to integrate orchestration with electronics thanks to the collaboration with Tempo Reale, a partner of the project.

In addition to the support and collaboration of institutions such as CIDIM – Comitato Nazionale Italiano Musica and Edizioni Curci, the competition is also connected, as in the past edition, with FilArmonia, Festival of Music and Spirituality, through multidisciplinary events and cultural insights into Dante and the themes of the final canto, and their relevance in contemporary times.

Many cultural institutions of Prato and Florence collaborate on the project, including the Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci, the Teatro Politeama Pratese, the Community of San Leolino of the Certosa di Firenze, and the Conservatorio “Luigi Cherubini” of Florence.

Rai Cultura and Rete Toscana Classica are media partners of the project.

The scores selected by the international jury are:

  • Paradiso Canto XXXIII by Gianmarco Contini (Florence)
  • L’amor che move il sole… by Miłosz Krawczyk (Sweden–Poland)
  • Land of Light by Roberto Sansuini (Parma)
